Canadian politicians who look like cartoon characters

Just as life sometimes imitates art, life forms sometimes imitate cartoon characters.

This phenomenon appears to take place with particular frequency in the realm of politics, where a number of politicians seem to be taking cues from characters in the world of Disney.

Take a look at the pictures below and vote on which duo looks the most alike.

Also, please feel to suggest a politician-cartoon-character duo.

Northern Gateway pipeline

A wide chasm divides Alberta and British Columbia when it comes to the Northern Gateway pipeline.

A poll conducted by Abacus Data shows that 30% of Alberta respondents strongly support the Northern Gateway while 33% "somewhat" support it.

By contrast, in British Columbia 40% of respondents strongly oppose the project while 16% are "somewhat" against it.

The divide was similarly apparent when it came to Northern Gateway's economic benefits.

46% of respondents in Alberta "strongly agree" that all Canadians would benefit from wealth generated by the pipeline. 28% of Albertans somewhat agree.

In British Columbia, 24% of respondents "strongly disagree" that Canadians would benefit from the pipeline and 28% "somewhat agree" with the idea.

Where do you stand on the Northern Gateway Pipeline proposal?

Should we allow that to happen?

Do you see it as the greatest threat to the BC environment in your lifetime?

B.C.'s apology to Chinese Canadians

It continues to be shocking that, as recently as 1947, there was explicit institutional racism against Chinese immigrants to Canada.

Last Thursday, the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia finally passed a motion to apologize to Chinese Canadians.

Canada as a whole was deeply implicated. Though B.C. was the province chiefly concerned, the two most important laws that discriminated against Chinese immigrants were passed by the Parliament of Canada.

Eight years ago, after he became prime minister, Stephen Harper moved promptly to offer an apology.

Do you think the province’s apology to Chinese Canadians was sincere?

The first immigrants from China to B.C. arrived in Victoria in the 1850s to join the Fraser Valley Gold Rush. By 1872, they were prohibited from voting. The prohibition wasn't lifted until 1949 in B.C.

By the 1880s, construction of the CP Railway was employing thousands of Chinese immigrants. But after the railway was completed, to discourage further immigration, a $50 head tax was imposed in 1885, and by 1903 it was raised to $500.

It's estimated about 82,000 Chinese paid the tax until the Exclusion Act came into effect in 1923, effectively banning further immigration from China until 1947. Restrictions on Chinese immigration remained in place until 1967.

The apology, which was introduced by Premier Christy Clark on Thursday morning, aims to recognize and make amends for 160 historical racist and discriminatory policies imposed in B.C., such as denying Chinese immigrants the right to vote and charging them a head tax to immigrate.

There was no individual compensation offered as part for the apology, but Clark did announce the government would put $1 million into a legacy fund that would be used to fund educational initiatives.

Clark said the apology was formulated after nearly a year of hearings on the issue, which included debate on whether compensation should be offered.

B.c. Teachers Strike 2014

Do you support the B.C. Teachers Federation in their current job action?

Does the teacher job action affect you?

Do you think there is enough goodwill to achieve a teacher contract without further job action?

Do you think the teachers setting up rotating strike action at schools across the province next week is a smart negotiating tactic?

B.C. teachers begin four days of rotating strikes in the province on Monday, May 26, as part of escalating job action in their contract negotiations with the province.

Parents and kids are continually at the centre of this tug-of-war between the BCTF and government.

Texting while driving

Do you continue to see drivers texting and talking on mobile devices?

Is a shaming campaign like Twit Spotting necessary in order to get people to stop using hand-held devices while driving?

Twit Spotting

Twit Spotting is an online campaign to expose distracted drivers

Twit Spotting posts photos of people using their phones while driving.

The website encourages people to send the pictures, along with information about where the photo was taken.

According to the website, "the more of us out there documenting, the more behavior will change."

The biggest challenge to preventing distracted driving is complacent social attitudes. There is no stigma, there is no sense of shame.

We're going to have to re-position what it means whe people see you talking on the phone.

Maybe stand-up comedians should be recruited to ridicule the behaviour.

Would it change the minds of people who already think the law doesn't apply to them?

Could you think of an idea that would prevent this type of behavior?

Words, expressions you find annoying?

We all earned that familiar saying "stick and stones may break your bones, but words can never hurt you." Then we grow up and we the power that words really have.

Words can hurt or annoy you.

So which words, expressions do you find annoying and hope that people would stop using them?

In my list there are many.

The first one is, "rant"

"Rant" has become our way of invalidating opinions.

The word:  Should

Should we stop using the word "should" ?

How many times a day do you use the word "should" in reference to yourself or other people? We use it a lot.

Have you noticed that telling yourself you should be doing more or being more was not actually helping you do more or be more?

When we use the word "should," we're not accepting reality. We're talking about things that we wish were so, but aren't (or vice versa).

Whenever I used the word "should" when talking to myself, it was motivated by a lack of self-acceptance rather than encouragement.

What's your take on the word "should" ?

I believe we should stop using the expression, "You're being defensive!"

If you've ever been on the receiving end of these words, you know that the last thing that you feel like doing upon hearing them is to drop your guard and open your heart. Ironically, that's probably exactly what the person delivering these words is trying to get you to do.

And going back to the topic of this blog, what words, expressions do you find annoying?

What Makes Up Happiness?

Walter Hagen (1892-1969) was an American professional golfer
"Don't hurry, don't worry, you're only here for a short visit, so be sure to smell the flowers along the way."

Nobody is absolutely sure if the following story is true, but here's the version I've heard...

When John Lennon was a young boy, his mother often told him that the key to life is to be happy. When he got older, one of Lennon's teachers gave his class an assignment: "Write down what you want to be when you grow up." Lennon wrote down, "Happy."

The teacher handed little Lennon his paper back and said, "I don't think you understand the assignment." Lennon handed the paper right back to the teacher and said, "I don't think you understand life."

Whether the story is true or not, does not matter. It's powerful enough to make a point.

Should restaurants offer discount for 'well-behaved kids'?

A Calgary restaurant cuts bill for parents of well-behaved offspring.

Calgary’s Carino Bistro deducts $5 from the bill of any table where the youngest guests don’t leave a bad taste with other diners.

So should restaurants offer discounts for 'well-behaved kids'?

Critics of the move said it is unnecessary to reward parents for teaching their children good manners, which they should already be doing.

Would surcharge on unruly children be more effective at deterring bad manners?

Restaurant offering discounts to polite customers

Sign outside Côte d'Azur establishment lists price of coffee as €7 but 'Bonjour, un café, s'il vous plaît' costs only €1.40

The manager of the cafe said he had not yet had to enforce the politeness policy, and admitted the sign was more of a gentle reminder than a serious threat.

"It started as a joke because at lunchtime people would come in very stressed and were sometimes rude to us when they ordered a coffee," Pepino told the English language website the Local.

"It's our way of saying: 'Keep calm and carry on.'"

He added: "Most of my customers are regulars and they just see the funny side and exaggerate their politeness.

"But people are more relaxed now, and they're smiling more. That's the most important thing."
